Fly Fishing Salmon
The Fraser Valley offers first-class fly-fishing opportunities, including one the largest returns of salmon in the world, thanks to the mighty Fraser River. Two supporting hatcheries have helped in sustaining the fishery industry. From their successes, combined with the abundance of fish already home to British Columbia, B.C.’s fish population is world renowned. At the right time of season, salmon are so prolific we’ve been able to hook 40+ daily… an angler’s dream.Weekends yielding hundreds of hits are not hard for us to imagine.Late July, early August come the biggest runs of Sockeye, the first of the season’s big returns, lasting until late September, early October.Pinks come during odd years (2005, 07, 09 etc.), showing prolific returns, too; over 20 million fish in one of these years. You should book a year in advance to secure a date with us – these runs are legendary.
Middle of September to late November shows a mouth-watering run of Coho (silvers), Chinook (king), and Chum, in droves – the famous Fraser Valley fall salmon runs. The valley attracts record numbers of anglers to its pristine mountain rivers and its fast flowing Fraser for incredible grade ‘A’ salmon fishing.
The killer Chinook run yields massive fish, over 60 pounds of speed and power, a thrill of a catch and worth a trek.Chum is no joke, either: a powerful fight, snappy on the line, and a famous thief of good tackle – the Chum is some good old rod-busting fun.Quick to the fly, and in the greatest of numbers, the Chum is a local favourite for fly enthusiasts.
Not to discount the flighty, aggressive, Coho, a formidable fight every fall.Quick, too, to the fly, they tend to be the most temperamental of Salmon, a bit more of a challenge, even the experienced angler.
Fly Fishing for Steelhead
Steelhead come with a little more work. But that’s what makes them all the more rewarding.Be patient, be sharp, and with luck, one of these aggressive, shallow water fish will be hooked and yours.Averaging at roughly 10 pounds, up to 20 on a good day, each fish is truly special. The best months are from February until April’s end.Your guide supplies all equipment and technical knowledge, but the experience is all yours. The “Humpback” Salmon should be on your list if you like the feeling of standing in pristine silence in the midst of a flowing river – it should be on any angler’s list. The experience is one of learning, building skill, and catching the some beautiful fish.
